Design and Technology

    In Design and Technology lessons pupils their ability to combine practical skills with creative thinking in order to solve problems.

    It is a very popular hands-on subject, appealing to pupils natural curiosity and inventiveness and enabling them to begin to understand the important link between design and functions.  They are encouraged to think imaginatively, not in terms of right or wrong outcomes but rather in terms of solutions which work.

    Pupils have timetabled Design and Technology lessons from Year 5 although many of the materials and tools used will have been introduced within the Art curriculum earlier. The programme of study is planned to be both in line with current National Curriculum requirements, in terms of knowledge, skills and understanding, and to maximise continuity and progression so that the pupils can develop the confidence to become independent problem solvers. They might be asked to design a range of party stationery for a young child, plan and construct a pair of felt slippers based on an animal theme or build a battery powered buggy which will win in a race across the playground.  Through assignments such as these, the pupils learn to analyze and evaluate existing products, develop their technical knowledge and understanding of materials and mechanisms, and explore, describe and refine their own design ideas.  The many opportunities for working together with a partner or team foster their ability to communicate their ideas clearly and in a range of formats, work cooperatively and compromise where necessary. Above all, the pupils experience the satisfaction and enjoyment of seeing their own ideas become a testable reality.
