Our aim is that pupils should enjoy mathematics and, whether a budding scholar or a tentative mathematician, that they will leave OPS a confident and enthusiastic mathematician well-prepared to take on the challenges of the subject at their senior school or beyond.
A team of enthusiastic and inspirational class teachers and subject specialists ensure that the basic techniques of mathematics are learnt through understanding and repetition. Our traditional approach is complemented by our use of interactive whiteboards and a variety of other programs, websites and practical activities which bring Maths to life and aid understanding.
In addition to report card grading and internal assessments, pupils from Years 2 to 7 pupils undertake a standardised numeracy screening test so that progress can be carefully monitored and tracked year on year. The setting of pupils from Year 3 ensures that teaching can be directed effectively to the needs of the individual. The Learning Support Department and teaching assistants can also provide support for those less confident in mathematics, whilst the more able are stretched by puzzles, problem solving and open ended investigative tasks.
Selected pupils take part in the Primary Maths Challenge (Under 11) and the United Kingdom Junior Challenge (Under 13) – and follow-on papers. Many outstanding results have been obtained, producing gold, silver and bronze certificates.
