Music Room at OPS

Music

Music is an integral part of school life.

Music at The Oratory Prep School is taught with the aim of developing the enjoyment of the subject within every child, whether as a performer, listener or composer. We recognise that music is both a subject and a passion and we would hope that the love of the activity would stay with them always. The study of music gives insight into our own and other cultures. The skills which it develops are useful both in the classroom and in our wider lives. In fostering appreciation and creativity we are able to discover the particular qualities of each child. Everyone is welcome to contribute to music whether just for fun or with more serious intent.

Our Music Department

We have a purpose-built music department complete with a suite of practice rooms, a large rehearsal room with a vast array of instruments and a music tech room. Pupils can play in our many ensembles including an orchestra, jazz band and same instrument groups. Singing is enjoyed throughout the school and pupils can take part in choirs from Intermediate choir in Year 5 to Senior choir and Choristers (our auditioned chamber choir) in Years 6 to 8.

Throughout Senior Prep, children have the opportunity to explore different musical genres and instruments. Through class music pupils learn to play instruments (in Year 5 all learn the clarinet), listen to, discuss and compose music. Pupils also encounter recording and editing in our provision for Music technology. They can take individual lessons with our comprehensive range of peripatetic music teachers and take part in many performances.

We also prepare children for music scholarships to a wide range of senior schools.
