Maths is essential for all. By the time pupils leave the school they will all have been exposed to a wide variety of topics which will enable them to cope with the demanding requirements of the secondary syllabus.

All of the pupils at the school  work at a level that is right for them. Some pupils, who find the subject hard, are placed in smaller classes, where they also have learning support assistants working beside them to give further guidance.

Tables are taught throughout the school. Unless a pupil has secure knowledge of all number facts, he/she will not be able to understand more complex problems. A variety of methods for learning tables is taught.

Happiness is a word that should be top of the list when we discuss the pupils in our classes. Pupils who are happy will achieve more and will end up being more confident. All teachers strive to have good working relationships with all pupils.

Successmaker is a powerful computer program that enables pupils to improve their skills in all topics. It will ensure that all pupils do succeed and the program helps pupils to improve their confidence and self-esteem.

Opportunities exist for the most able to be stretched. Extension materials exist in all classes in the form of ‘maths challenges’ and pupils are entered for external National competitions. Pupils also discover knowledge themselves by using computers to research topics.

Pre-prep is where it all begins. There are dedicated and knowledgeable staff in our pre-prep who will ensure that the basic skills are in place by the time the pupils enter the prep school. Results in key stage one tests are always excellent.

Students at the OPS achieve excellent results in the 11+ and 13+. We are non-selective but we believe that all pupils should be able to do well in this subject . . . And we are succeeding in delivering this promise to all pupils.
