Welcome from our Head of Boarding

Mrs Mikayla van den Berg
Head of Boarding

Tell us about yourself

I have been in teaching for all of my adult life and it is something that I was passionate about even whilst I was at school. I was always inspired by my History teacher and wanted to help foster that same enthusiasm with future generations. I completed my degree at the University of Pretoria and taught in various schools in South Africa for about 8 years. However, I have always wanted to travel and in 2017, made the big decision to relocate to the UK.

For the past few years, I have worked at a Church of England Academy in London, where I taught History and PE. I also held the role of Deputy Head of Department and Head of Year 7. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the job, but my favourite was definitely the relationships that I built with my year group. I was so proud watching them blossom from nervous Year 6s in the summer, who are apprehensive about starting high school, into confident and capable learners who are excited to take on the challenge of Year 8.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am very active in my spare time and enjoy playing and coaching netball, yoga, and going for long walks or hikes whenever I get the chance. I love reading and listening to music but also have the guilty pleasure of being an avid baker – cakes, desserts, pastries and ice cream, are all on my list of favourites. This is probably the reason why I love being so active, so that I can work off all of my calories.

What did you choose to work at The Oratory Prep School?

I was blown away by how warm and welcoming everyone at OPS were, both pupils and staff, when I came for my interview. I love how enthusiastic the children are, and how excited they are to learn through class discussions and enquiry. Most importantly, I am so excited to get this role because of the sense of family. As someone who lives very far from home, with all of my family back in South Africa, I feel a definite kinship with the children who will be boarding and I look forward to developing and strengthening our boarding offering.
