Congratulations to one of our recent Alumni, Tom, who has been selected to be part of the London Irish Rugby Developing Player Programme (DPP). The aim of the programme is to engage with players aged 14-16 and support their development.
Tom, who attended The OPS from 2016 – 2022 and was Head Boy in his final year, is continuing his education at one of the leading independent senior schools, Wellington College. He was selected for their U14A Rugby team, starting at blindside flanker, and has enjoyed an unbeaten season.
Speaking about being selected for the London Irish DPP, Tom praised his OPS Rugby Coach, Mr Fairburn, saying,
“This means a lot to me as without the skills that Mr Fairburn taught me, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve as much as I have. I want to thank Mr Fairburn for everything he has done for me, from being one of the most memorable teachers at The OPS, to being a fantastic coach.”
Tom’s parents also added,
“We can’t over-emphasise what a great role model Mr Fairburn has been for our son.”
Commenting about Tom as a rugby player during his time at The OPS, Mr Fairburn said,
“Tom was a fantastic player for the very successful 2021 1st Rugby Team. As a player, he combined superb technical skills with an outstanding work rate. He was an incredibly coachable pupil, who was always keen to improve and drove standards around him. I was never in doubt that Tom’s rugby would continue to go from strength to strength as he moved to Wellington College.
The Rugby coaches at The OPS aim to not only provide pupils with the raw tools they need to take their rugby on to the next level, when they move to their senior schools, but also to cultivate a love and a passion for rugby that we hope they can foster throughout their lives, regardless of their aptitude. I am delighted and proud to hear of Tom’s successes which I hope can, in a small way, be attributed to the coaching he received during his time at The Oratory Prep School.”Categories: Alumni Sport
