Nursery Outdoor Learning

At The Oratory Prep School, we believe that fresh air, exploration and hands-on experiences are essential to a child’s early development. With 65 acres of South Oxfordshire countryside on our doorstep, outdoor learning is part of everyday life at Little Oaks – and trust us, our little ones certainly get their step count in!

Every day brings new opportunities to discover something different. Children build dens, hunt for minibeasts, splash through puddles, climb, balance, collect natural treasures and watch the changing seasons unfold around them. Time outdoors sparks curiosity, encourages imagination and helps children make sense of the world in a way that simply can’t be replicated indoors.

Outdoor learning also plays an important role in developing confidence and resilience. Children learn to work together, assess risks, solve problems and become increasingly independent, all while enjoying the freedom that comes with having so much space to explore.

As part of The Oratory Prep School, Little Oaks children enjoy regular Forest School sessions led by experienced staff, as well as access to the exceptional grounds and facilities that make every day an adventure.

We don’t see outdoor learning as a break from education. It’s where some of the richest learning happens.

A World of Nature to Discover

Our purpose-built nursery is designed for curious explorers. From our cosy, enclosed playground, children step right into the wonders of our secure woods, where each day brings a new adventure. Whether they’re collecting leaves, spotting wildlife or discovering the magic of the seasons, children are always encouraged to follow their sense of wonder.

Led by Nature-Loving Experts

Our staff are true outdoor enthusiasts who know how to turn every session into a learning adventure. With tree climbing, den building and habitat hunting, they help children embrace challenges, take safe risks and build a lifelong love for the outdoors. These activities encourage independence, confidence, and resilience, all while sparking curiosity and joy.

Growing Through Play and Discovery

Outdoor learning isn’t just an add-on at The Oratory Prep School, it’s at the heart of our philosophy. We know the benefits firsthand: children who spend time outdoors tend to be more focused, creative, and socially engaged. When children have time to explore the woods, get muddy or have a quiet moment under a tree, outdoor play helps them grow in every way.

At Little Oaks we don’t just talk about nature – we live it every day. Come join us, and see your child thrive with the freedom and excitement of learning in the great outdoors.
