Reducing Chromebook Use at The Oratory Prep School: A Balanced Approach to Learning

At The Oratory Prep School, we are taking a thoughtful step towards reducing Chromebook use in lessons and prep. This change reflects our ongoing commitment to providing an education that is both forward-thinking and carefully balanced.

Over recent months, we have had valuable conversations with parents about screen time, technology in schools and the importance of physical written work. Many families have shared how much they appreciate seeing exercise books, projects and handwritten prep coming home. We agree. While technology has an important role to play in modern education, it works best when used with intention and care.

Our decision to reduce Chromebook use is not about removing technology altogether. Instead, it is about creating a healthier balance. By increasing opportunities for handwritten work, face-to-face discussion and practical activities, we are encouraging deeper focus and stronger engagement in the classroom.

There is growing evidence that writing by hand supports memory, understanding and creativity. Pupils often process information more thoroughly when they slow down to write, sketch or draft ideas on paper. In lessons, this shift is already encouraging richer discussion and more sustained concentration. In prep time, it allows pupils to step away from screens and develop strong independent study habits.

At The Oratory Prep School, our aim is always to help children grow in curiosity, kindness and wisdom. Part of that growth involves learning how to manage technology well. By modelling balance at school, we support families in creating healthy routines at home.

This initiative sits alongside our broader approach to learning: small class sizes, lively discussion, strong pastoral care and the space for pupils to think deeply. Technology remains a useful tool, yet it is no longer the default.

We are excited about the positive impact this change is already having across the Prep School.
